Will this be first drawn gets first pick? Or will it be first reply? Do players have the option to not play with someone if they choose them or will this follow the established PYP format. I could see this becoming a mess without some further clarification on how partners are chosen. edited by chambie on 6/19/2017 Players can choose to play or not play with anyone they wish (i.e., players can accept or decline an invitation). Basically, if you win an entry, you can play with anyone you want that doesn't also have an entry, unless one of you forfeits your spot. I will suggest to the promoter, however, that if two players that win entries elect to forfeit a spot and play together, to make sure that they each approve the move.
EDIT: A little more clarification: Players don't simply "pick" who they want to play with; the partner must approve. The reason for the 1 day deadline is so that all players who are drawn will be notified on that day. It is up to the players to see who is available (they are not providing a full list for inspection). So, there is an element of "first reply" to it, but only in the sense of whomever gets their deal together first gets signed up first. But everyone has the (essentially) the same amount of time.
The person putting this together is going to call players and set things up personally and manually. He/she will do his/her best to make it work. Some things are being resolved as they go; an exact algorithm is not available at our request. edited by BillyBoy on 6/21/2017 |

I received an email about being selected this morning. It only requested my info and did not ask for a partner's name (which is good because I don't have one yet). It also is due back in 1 day, so check your emails! edited by happydog on 6/26/2017
I would presume that once the teammate selection is requested, the 1 day limit would only apply when trying to play with another player that was also drawn. (Don't take this as official - I will try to confirm that with El Jimador today...) |

UPDATE:
I just talked to the Arizona representative, and it now sounds like El Jimador may have taken the lazy way out and are not going to bother facilitating the teams that consist of two players who were both drawn. This is not such a surprise. This would be a lot of work and they are about tequila, not foosball, and simply want to do their promotion and get it over with.
Note that this is not official. A few important points on this:
1) He is going to talk to them today to clarify this, and hopefully facilitate selection of teammates between players with entries as earlier described. 2) In the meantime, if you know who you want to play with FIND OUT IF THEY HAVE ALSO WON BEFORE RESPONDING! This will enable you to preempt this potential issue and select each other by effectively forfeiting one of your spots right off the bat. 3) Stay tuned here... I will post another update as soon as I hear back from the AZ rep.

Also, if I'm some college kid and I was drawn, however I don't know anyone else who was drawn and they aren't going to tell me who was drawn, I'm basically fucked? Doesn't seem feasible to restrict teams to only winners of the draw especially if they aren't going to provide the list of drawn people and a way to contact one another. Ricky, not sure where you got that info, but it's never been stated that you a have to play with another drawing winner. On the contrary, they didn't anticipate 2 winners wanting to pair up. That is what we are trying to resolve. edited by BillyBoy on 6/26/2017 |

UPDATE:
After spending the entire day trying to get a concrete answer about how players who win an entry but want to team up with someone else who won an entry should go about this task, it seems that the people at the top don't want to give a specific answer. This has led the Arizona representative to tell me to advise all AZ players who have won to simply respond and ensure they are signed up. He said that he will make sure those who want to team up can do so.
So that is the main point here. For those who simply want to know what to do next, the answer is:
GO SIGN UP NOW by responding to the email!
The following is merely a little commentary on the situation, for those interested...
The only real downside to this is that it may cost the event a number of teams. From the players short term point of view, less players means a better chance to win. All good, right? But having a full event of 128 teams has greater value to the sponsor, which increases the chance of them doing more such things in the future. |

UPDATE:
As some of you know, I was in dispose for the entire weekend and unable to get to my computer, etc. Anyway, here is the condensed version of the background and current state of the AZ El Jimador event. Hopefully this will clear up some confusion and anxiety over this event. Sorry it took awhile to get to this point, but I think after you read this, you will all be happy with what is planned for the next month
The event is being organized both from a high, national level (El Jimador), and from the local level (in our case, local Arizona distributor Breakthru Beverage). Those at the top composed the promotion purely from the point of view of a tequila company promoting its product. They have little knowledge of the game of foosball, and therefore, the event was designed as more of a sweepstakes than a foosball tournament. On the other hand, the local AZ organizer (Steve M.) does have a little bit of foosball experience, and wanted to try to pull this off as a somewhat bona fide foosball event. For this reason, he originally contacted me and has been in touch with me over the past few weeks in an effort to make the event as successful and popular as possible. However, he did not technically have control over the mechanics of the operation.
Until now!
Several of the other regions hosting the event across the country did not manage to register enough players - especially among the primary demographic they were seeking (millennials). As a result, they changed their format - reducing the event to a single qualifier that is essentially a big El Jimador party with random El Jimador drinkers playing for the right to meet in the final. They also wanted to do the same in Arizona. However, due to our comparatively large number of registrants, Steve was able to talk the big dogs into letting him conduct 3 of the scheduled primaries as previously planned, while El Jimador will still host the "party" qualifier in week 4 with a different rule set. More importantly, Steve was also (finally) given control of the whole process.
So that is the back story leading up to where we are right now.
Moving forward...
Many of you may have received an e-mail recently asking you to name your partner, and list your preferences for qualifier date & venue. You may have also been given a deadline to respond. First and foremost, DO NOT PANIC! As of this moment, you do not need to worry about the deadline. Steve has assured me that he is committed to including everyone that responded. Now that he and I are both back in town after a very long weekend, we plan to spend the next few days piecing together the team list, and you will hear from one or both of us again shortly.
Also, we will very likely admit some more players in order to completely fill the event(s). In addition, we are still deciding whether to allow players to compete in more than one of the qualifiers. This will be finalized within a couple days.
So sit back, relax, and get ready for an exciting tournament! More to come very soon

UPDATE:
The local organizer, Steve Musslin, sent the following e-mail on July 14 to all of the players who won an entry to the El Jimador event. (I've enclosed it here for completeness, and because some players may not have received the mail.)
---------------------------------
Good Afternoon Everyone, Here are the updates for the upcoming $5000 winner take all Foosball Tournament sponsored by El Jimador Tequila.
Thank you all for your participation and getting the information in on a timely matter. We REALLY appreciate it. You and your team member are locked into this tournament. We fell a little short on the amount of teams we thought we would get signed up for the upcoming tournaments. We are going to adjust the program to fix the lack of teams. This adjustment will actually benefit some of you and increase your chances to get in the final tournament for the overall $5000 prize.
We will still be having the 3 lead up tournaments...
- Duke’s Bar and Grill, 7-22-2017
- Stinger’s Bar and Grill, 7-29-2017
- Loft Again, 8-5-17
The adjustment is that now your team has 3 chances to make the final tournament on August 19th at The Park Street Food bar in down town phoenix. All of the teams signed up for this tournament are welcome to play in all 3 lead up tournaments.
The top 2 teams from each week will have a spot in the final
- If you place in the top 2 in week 1 at Dukes you are locked in and cannot play in the other 2 lead up tournaments. Your place is in the final will already be secure.
- If you do not place in the top 2 in week 1 you have two more chances to make the final and are welcome to come back to the next week’s tournament at Stingers to try again.
- After week 2 at Stingers there will be one more shot for the remaining teams at Loft Again to compete for a spot in the final.
- The Final on August 19th at The Park Street Food Bar will consist of 8 teams. 6 teams from our 3 lead up tournaments and 2 teams from another program being ran by El Jimador.
I hope this answers all of your questions but if you need any clarification please send me an email and I will try and answer it. Remember you need to be there by 6:45PM to sign in. Games will start at 7PM. Make sure you bring your ID. (These times are the same for all 3 tournaments) So I hope to see you all at Duke’s next Saturday, if you can’t make it to Duke’s remember you still have 2 other chances to play. Good luck to everyone and thanks again for your participation in this program.

UPDATE:
There were also a couple e-mails sent to participants (on July 7) addressing the rules, and answering questions about the event structure. Here they are: ---------------------------------------------------------
FUTBOLITO EL JIMADOR GAME RULES 1. Each game will be 10 minutes long or first team to 10. If there is a tie after 10 minutes we go to sudden death goal. 2. Flip a coin. A coin flip decides who serves the foosball to start the foosball game and the side of the table they want to be in. 3. After the first goal is scored, the team who was last scored on gets to serve the next ball. The foosball must be touched by a man before the ball goes into a goal for a legal goal to occur. 4. Any jarring, sliding, or lifting of the table shall be illegal. The penalty for violation of this rule:
- First Offense - whoever incurs on this illegal activity the other team will be in title to re serving the ball.
- Subsequent violation, the opposite team will be awarded one goal.
5. Dead Balls - If a foosball stops in the middle of two opposing team rods, the ball must be picked up and reserved. The serve goes back to the team that was last scored on. If a dead ball occurs on the defensive side of the table behind the defensive 2 bar, the defensive player must move the ball back into playing position. 6. Players are not allowed to retain the ball for more than 15 seconds. 7. Out of Play - If a ball comes off the table area or hits a top rail and comes back into the table area, the ball is ruled out of play and must be reserved by the team that was last scored on. 8. No time outs are allow during the game 9. The tournament system will be by direct elimination. 10. Teams are requested to be at the venue 15 minutes before their tournament starts. In case they fail to reach the venue on time, they will be immediately disqualified. 11. Players are expected to behave accordingly. In case they disrespect the rules of the game or the other team, they will be immediately disqualified. 12. Each game will have a ref to overlook the time of the game and make judgment calls when needed. MISCELLANOUS Q & A:
Q: Will it be single or double elimination? A: Single
Q: Will you have timers at each table to monitor the 10 minute time limit? A: I do not believe we will have visual timers, we will give a 5 min, 2 min and 1 min warning during the game.
Q: How many qualifying teams will reach the final from each event? A: 8 Teams will reach the final. Top 2 from each tournament and will be seeded accordingly
Q: If a team plays in an event and does not qualify can they play in the next qualifying event? A: As of right now you only have one shot, in the event we do not have enough teams to fill all the tournaments we will re-evaluate.
Q: Will all the events be played on Tornado tables? A: Yes edited by BillyBoy on 7/15/2017 |
