Should we use this or your NetFoos point list (which, for most Tucson players, should be more accurate)? |

Just a reminder that we have specifically targeted the event schedule for this upcoming Tucson/Phoenix tournament. We are making a strong effort to eliminate conflicts and late starts, etc. by both adding tables and spreading out the time between events. This should result in less waiting around to play, and also hopefully eliminate the need to play "race-to-7" style games in the loser brackets.
Anyhow, with that said, I just wanted to post this as a pleasant reminder, and also to stress that
we intend to start the first event AT THE SCHEDULED TIME (3:30),
so please make sure to get there early!

For the future my vote is on pay out 1 through 3. Interesting how these comments always seem to come from someone who coincidentally landed in that spot. J/K
Anyhow, 5/6 paid $10/person, I think.
Also, there are arguments for paying deeper, as well. And I think the argument for paying only 1-3 would be much stronger if there were no money added. I think it was about right, and it's only a couple bucks difference anyhow, so no real biggie. edited by BillyBoy on 9/21/2009 |

How about if I point some fingers? Like, for instance, at those who criticize everything they see without bothering to take the time to understand what they see.
the one year i played in the league i had a 3.5 rating. Somehow Billy decided to just give me something like a five something, what do you have me at? Maybe you can post the list?
You ended the last league you played with a 3.2 rating. This season, we raised ALL players by a full point (for a very simple reason, which I don't doubt you would misinterpret like everything else), which brought you to 4.2. So: a) Billy did not just "decide" to give you a "five something" b) You do not have a "five something" c) You never had a "five something" d) your rating was changed along with everyone else's e) the list is always posted on this site
So, in two short sentences you have managed to be *completely* wrong about 4 or 5 different things. Yet, you bravely go on:
As you probably know from my latest posts I don't like random decided stuff (whoever wants me to go into details and point fingers let me know, I won't be shy!). They are lots of people who don't come out on Saturday because of that shit going on.
What is this about? Please elaborate on your eloquently presented "random decided stuff". Point some fingers! And see if you can do it without distorting and inventing facts. About the only thing I can even remotely imagine is your obsession with the payouts. And on that note, I have these points:
a) They aren't random. If you took the time to look at the dispersion over all the tournaments, you'd see they follow a pretty consistent pattern. Hey, maybe you would prefer to utilize some exact formula or bring your calculator along, but I have this thing about prioritizing what I do with my time, and would rather not waste it worrying about a dollar or two out of 200 or so. b) I have managed to get the bars to add a nice chunk of money to the Saturday tournaments, ALL of which goes straight to the players. But keep on looking that gift horse in the mouth, man. Because now that you've got me thinking about it, I don't see why I don't take a cut of that for myself or whomever runs the tournament and deals with all the complainers for 6 hours. What do you think? c) I couldn't give one shit about payout money. The money is rather trivial, and if it matters that much to someone, I feel sorry for that person. Hell, I have hardly even been getting in the money myself for awhile, so any kind of insinuation about me manipulating payouts doesn't seem to make much sense, does it? Maybe you could introduce me to this mystical entity that is "benefiting" from this. d) If there are lots of people who don't come out because of "shit like this", I am glad to hear it! Because I doubt I speak for only myself when I say that we don't need "shit like them". And their time is certainly better spent at home on the couch, bong in hand, solving real problems and producing all kinds of things that society finds useful.
Or maybe you are referring to the night that you showed to the Hi-Lo and I didn't have your rating on hand, so I made my best estimate. This was simply an oversight on my part for forgetting that points list, so I did about all that I could do in that situation. But certainly not a m.o.
I think Dan's points are ok as they at least have some basis. a) I would bet that you have absolutely no idea what the league points are intended to do, nor how they're generated. To simply see one side of something that you do not like, and criticize the entire system without having any clue about any of the other considerations, is silly. The league points do not attempt to exactly define a player's ability. If that's what I wanted, that's what I'd do, and I would use Elo or a similar system. But, ah - there's the rub! There are more important considerations which that system is targeting (as should be obvious by the growing league). That said, the league rating points are still - overall - a more accurate representation of MOST of the local players than any other resource, which is why I've used it for the Hi-Lo. Elo would certainly be better if it were properly implemented and tracked, but I only have so much time and haven't done this. J.B. may do this. Great! At least he is actually doing something, instead of complaining that others are not. b) It is extremely likely that I (Billy) have much, much, MUCH more experience with Elo and USCF style rating systems than any fooser - or any person - that you know. I've played over 300,000 games of chess in the past 15 years, and have worked extensively with those systems. I have written one of the most popular chess clients on the internet incorporating such systems. I know exactly what their purpose is, and exactly how they work. The league doesn't use them for distinct reasons.
But feel free to point fingers. edited by BillyBoy on 10/29/2009 |

And FWIW, Joe, I like you as a person. But you seem to be upset or discontent about some things I've done, and you've stated them (although indirectly). And some of it pissed me off, and I stated that.
So, hopefully, by presenting such things directly, it will help to clear that crap up.

Good question Joe, thinking about that a little bit, maybe what I'll do instead is rank players starting with:
1. Dan's elo points (he's got most of the Arizona players listed) 2. League points (If they are not in Dan's system) 3. VIFA and/or IFP (If not in Dan's or League system) 4. no ranking, determine points based on skill level of player (this would largely be guesswork, but hopefully we can get an idea based on how that person plays in a couple pickup games)
JMHO: He has some of the Phoenix guys listed, yes, but still doesn't have much of a sample. I would still say the league points will probably be more accurate at the moment. But really, Elo adjusts quite fast, so I don't think it would matter a whole lot no matter which way you went about it. edited by BillyBoy on 10/29/2009 |
