Hello Foosers -

I have changed the tournaments at Dukes a bit. We will now alternate between a DYP and a BYP each week instead of a BYP each week. The DYP action starts this Friday with a Hi/Lo A-B DYP. 8 bucks all entries. The coming events on the website has been updated to show the changes.

Happy Foosing.

Out of pure curiosity, what was the reason for the change? This may be a dumb question but what about adding it as a Saturday night event since Stingers Saturday night's are on hiatus?

Ricky - The bring, in my opinion was starting to get a bit stale. Same people winning each week so I wanted to give the opportunity to shake up the teams a bit. We have had many players support the event that never get in the money. Plus a little change now and then is not a bad thing. Maybe even Mr. Chunderful will show up every once in a while.

Brad,
When are you going to get rid of the singles, or at least play it only once or twice a month? Singles always makes the doubles events go late, especially if there's a large crowd. In my opinion, singles has gotten really stale.

Whats with the A/B Hi/Lo nuttiness? All the hi/lo, a/b, 'get a playing card cause your special' events haven't seemed to work for stingers, so why bring it to dukes? Why not just alternate between a regular DYP and BYP? I also second ricky's idea of doing a Saturday night DYP at dukes.

Here are my thoughts on three points/issues raised thus far in this thread...

1) Hi-Lo & handicapped events.
It was suggested that such events haven't worked for Stinger's, so why bring them to Duke's? I do not believe this is the case. If you look at all the data, the effect of the handicapped events on turnouts has actually been positive. E.g., the 12 Limited at Stinger's had the largest turnouts of any event type. The Loft regularly runs a Hi-Low with an excellent turnout. And the handicapped Interim League events have been a big success over the years. As well, the first Hi-Low at Duke's seems to have done well.

2) Singles events at Duke's.
I can understand the criticism of singles. I personally love the singles events, but alas, my personal taste has little to do with what is best for the whole scene. I don't really know if the current format is optimal. But I know that Brad is certainly paying attention and wants to make the overall Duke's experience as best as possible, and sometimes you just have to try things and see how they go. So, that's where we are right now - people are registering opinions and suggestions; Brad can take those comments, plus what he hears on the floor, plus all the tournament data, and then make the right adjustments. I hope that singles finds a happy place in the rotation; let's work on it!

3) Saturday night event at Duke's.
Although I'm certain the suggestion to host Saturday events at Duke's was made with good intentions (and offered by two of the most respected persons & assets in our player base, Ricky Chun and Chris Serrao), I believe it would have a deleterious effect on Arizona foosball as a whole.

This seems as good a time as any to offer a perspective on our great foosball scene in Phoenix...

I will start by making a grandiose statement about AZ Fooball: Arizona is currently home to one of the best foosball scenes in the nation. I will not be surprised if we become the #1 foosball location on the planet with a year or two. And Duke's Sports Bar is the golden nugget of AZ Foosball.

However...

None of this happened by accident or random chance. On the contrary, the recent high turnouts, the state championship events, big tournament add-ons, tours, and leagues (indeed, everything we see in place now) are all the result of years of hard work and specific, cooperative effort by many directors, sponsors, venues, AND players.

All of this is nice, indeed! smile But you may be asking what it has to do with the topic. (?)

It has to do with the big picture. It's natural to think "hey, we have a lot of great things happening right now and we have a fantastic playing venue in Duke's Sports Bar - so why not move everything there?" But we all need to understand that we are involved in an economic system of sorts, and in order to grow to our fullest potential valleywide, we have to work closely with our sponsors and host venues valleywide.

Stinger's Sports Bar and the Loft Again are critical venues for AZ Foosball. Stinger's is a large bar on the west side of Phoenix providing space for three tables. They have been very supportive of AZ Foosball over the years, adding tons of money to tournaments and are the primary sponsor of the league. The Loft has supported us tremendously as well, giving Ken Oglesby, Gary Cooper and Adrienne McCormack what they need to create success, as well as being the primary sponsor of the Phoenix Tour.

Adding a Saturday event at Duke's would likely adversely affect turnouts at Stinger's on Saturday, and probably the Loft on Sunday as well. In turn, if those venues lost appeal or if either venue decided to drop foosball altogether, we could lose valuable exposure valleywide, including sponsorship to tours and leagues, new recruits into the league, and risk losing some of the people who are currently involved in running and promoting foosball around the valley.

None of this is meant to say that such moves are never good; it's all about balance and timing. At the present time, such a move, IMHO, could be a big mistake. We may reach a point where such moves would be positive (e.g., when there is enough growth valleywide to support it without endangering a critical part of the structure). One only needs to look at a game like billiards to see this scenario. We are not there yet.

While it's certainly important for each of us to voice opinions, concerns and suggestions, it's equally important to hear the voices of everyone involved - including the venues and the new players. Even though I personally (being a low level "High" player) may prefer an open event to a high-low draw, I also like knowing that those open events have big turnouts specifically because we've successfully grown our player base by offering handicapped style events to new players.

In summary, I'm hoping that players can look at this big picture and realize just how far we've come with AZ Foosball and the big reasons for its success. I believe that the more each of us understands the whole machine that we are a part of, the more powerful it will become! smile

Well said Billy - Here is my response.....

Singles will be going to every other week, we will do it the nights we have the DYP's...

Chris - AB Hi/Lo is hardly nuttyness. I think the turnout of 10 teams last week proves that. You want nuttyness OK here it is.

At the request of several foosers the tournament on April 29th will be a BYP 1 ball rollerball. Since it is a rare 5th Friday in the month thought it would be a nice change. Prepare for something crazy each 5th Friday just to keep you on your toes. That will the the max of my nuttyness.

Love you all....Have a nice day.

I like the idea of pairing the singles with the DYPs. The brings are a little bit more serious so it can make some sense not to disrupt them as much.
