Last night was fun! Mark D and I held the table for almost 2 hours, then Doug Steele showed up, oh well. Doug and Kenny are a tough team anytime.
Anyway, packed house all night long, live music started at 9:30, lots of young people later on.
Adrian learned some new moves in 'Vegas.
You should come join us!

Remember pickup games at the local bar?
Each Friday for the last 2 months we've been hanging out, playing, talking and having fun.
Great place, live music, lively people: it's been great!

Last week Dan R and Scotty Y held the table for over an hour. I tried but failed to know them off. Played with Kenny, then Tom Husband, then Brad Chamberlain but just couldn't do it. It took Cowboy, having torn himself away from a table full of girls, to come over and win the table. It was late so I had to leave. I can only assume that he held the table the rest of the night.
Come down tomorrow. It's a blast!

Last Friday was a great time. I got there at about 6:30 (like normal) and Mark D was there. We warmed up until Billy and Adrienne showed up. Adrienne and I teamed up. When I saw she was bricking Billy, I knew we be winnin'! Then when Kenny showed up Adrienne played goal for him and bricked ME! So I had to play like mad to get around/through/behind her. Then she pulled out this pullkick/sidechip from the two and cleared the ball like 90%! That girl is learning fast. It wasn't until John JB Scully showed up that anybody made any headway against her.
Dan had that smooth as silk, quick-as-a-blink rollover going good. Kenny started shooting his push roller into a dead hole even when we were all expecting it. A couple of times I had both rods pulled dead and he STILL went around me. I just don't think that's fair!
Anyhow, come on down this Friday. It'll be fun.
Live music after about 9
Crowd, with lots of unattended ladies of all ages, mainly 20's 30's.

Another great Friday last week.
I don't recall anybody running the table so we ended up having a good turnover and some really exciting games. Mike Sames and Brian Hendricks had some good games. Dan Martin and I (Casey) teamed up a couple of times and played well. TJ (Xocoyotzin Telles) and Adrienne had some good games and showed us all how they took first in Mesa the Monday before. Billy Noland and John (JB) Scully had some good moves. While Billy and Brian were playing chess Dan Rayment and Mark D were playing and winning. Mark has that insidious front-toe-reverse-either-way move on the 3 that just drives me crazy!
I got to talk with one onlooker who told me he had experience but was reluctant to put any quarters up. Perhaps he, and his friends, will be inspired to come down on an off night and practice. I talked up the league.
We had a couple of moments where we didn't quite know who was up next, but I thought that was great. I remember not too long ago that finding any foos action in Phoenix was impossible. It's such a good game! And it's great time at the Dub on Friday nights for pickup games.
Hey, I might not be there tomorrow night. I have an MRI scheduled so I'm taking one of those relaxation pills. I may be asleep by 6:00 (No JB I am not usually asleep during Friday nights).

Last week at the Dubliner we all discovered an important fact: The girl's got a shot.
Adrienne was blasting a short push from the 2 that struck with force and scored (on me). It was a thing of beauty. How long has this girl been playing? Like 4 months, right?
Anyhow, Mike Sames was showing us that precision that makes him formidalbe. Ken O was shooting that rollover long, the one where you only really see a flash of foosman foot right before the blaaap in the back of the goal.
Dan Rayment was cold for a couple of games then went nuts with that smooth as silk roller (both sides). I was so frustrated.
Billy's got his roller going good again and he's doing some pulls that are deceptive. I'll get used to those soon, though, so he won't be a real pull threat soon.
Bryan Hendrix is getting sharper. He's got a dead pull from the 2 that is simply unbelievable. I saw it, it's ridiculous!
See U tonight!
We listened the the good band, the one that was there the week before. Again, unescorted ladies galore. I'm there every friday. |

Last Friday was another fun time.
Mark is in Europe for a couple of months so we missed his misdirection moves, but that's OK 'cause I needed a break from those dangerous things anyhow.
John (JB) Scully is getting his angle game dialed in. That short angle to the corner from a push shot is a killer. Maybe he'll break out his roller soon, don't get me wrong I don't wish a JB roller on anybody.
The band was really cool last week, on Friday's there is usually some rock and roll, Irish music is usually on the weeknights.
Billy is showing the work he has been doing on his five. If you pop by this week you'll get a chance to see some of his new moves.
Kenny has been showing his 'uropin. I don't quite understand it yet, but I will!
Andrianne and I teamed up for a couple of games and I got her up front. I've gotta say I have only seen one other person who can zero in on the ball and smack it hard like she can, and that's T.J. Tellas. When the ball came her way she was smacking it on goal and it took all the goalies by surprise. We won two games with her up front. She is developing so fast!
When you stop by tonight, you'll see what I mean.
We had a couple of locals step up and play. Nice guys. Good bar game. They and their wives stood by and watched for over 30 minutes. I hope they come back.
See you there! I'm there by about 7:15.

Friday was great!
Dennis Doyle popped by and was shooting lights out, complaining all the time that he was so rusty. Good to see Dennis.
Mike Miller was there early and stayed late. His pull shot is still strong and he's got a nasty middle now. I'm not really sure where Mike's been but I'm glad he's back.
Tom Husband was shooting that devastating pull. He surprised me a couple of times with his 5.
Kenny O still has that sweet 5 and ridiculous roller (both sides). He wanted to play just some 'cause he was playing Saturday.
I limp along like usual.
The Irish entertainer Tony Cummings as on stage last night leading people in songs, playing originals and doing he raucous audience-participation schtick. I had to look up from the table each time he called out "wiggle your butt!" or "chug it all and put it upside down on your head", and then the outrageous.. oh well, you should have been there.
Come on down.

Friday Night at the Dub

I got to the Dub a little late, about 9pm, last week. When I got there the table was busy, the crowd had formed and foosball was a happ'n! Billy Noland and John JB Scully had teamed up and I guess they were crushing everybody. By time they got off the table (JB's back was hurting) they had held the table for over an hour. Kenny O told me that they had won about 14 straight games.
Adrienne and I teamed up but just couldn't make it happen. We did get to 4-4 one time because A was brickin' and kickin' but I couldn't close the door.
Tom Husband and Jeff Harvey teamed up a couple of times. And even though they played well (Jeff has the tricky 5) they couldn't get the beat down either.
A local named "Bo" stepped up and started playing. He had game. He was gushing about "finally finding us" in Phoenix (He meant people who have game). I'm not sure where he's from but I'll ask him this next friday. Bo brought a couple of friends who wanted to win but couldn't get it done.
JB was being humble but he was blasting everybody from the front and the two.
I can see a good crowd being there this Friday too. You should pop by, grab a beer and some wings and hang out. Who knows, maybe JB will let you win a game! |

Mike Miller showed up last week. It's always good to play Mike. His creativity shows on the table and he's just so darn hard to block. Except for Adrienne of course. She's bricking everybody nowadays. Can you believe she's only been playing for about six months?
Kenny was on vacation so I was relieved from blocking his roller. Tonight may be another story however 'cause he's back in town. I can take it though.
John JB Scully allowed me win a few games. Thanks JB! So I left that night with some wins under my belt and a little more self-confidence. I carried that confidence into the first week of Leagues which started this week. Now that I've been practicing I'll be much harder to beat tonight. Come and down and let me show you, OK?
Billy's wrist seems to be getting better. His roller is slammin' and he'll slash a pull shot by you too once you get comfortable. He has been being sneaky like JB. I guess JB's game is rubbing off on all of us. Good thing too, 'cause without new shots and techniques and players we'd all go back into hibernation.
Speaking of fun to watch, we had a few more locals popping by to watch us play, groan out some "Wow"s and start telling their friends how good they were "back in the day". I think with just a little of concentrated effort we can show people how fun and exciting our sport can be.
Pop by for a few minutes, a couple of games, a couple of beers and you'll end up having a good time cheap. And yes, bring your date. They'll enjoy it too!

The Team of Casey, Tom and Adam won their cross-league match last Wednesday night against the team formerly known as "Super Sets". Most of our games were close and it was the first game of the season so nobody seemed really on their game but it was fun. We were at Duke's so it was a nice place, and we got a free drink for being in the league. They have great food, but I didn't eat that night.

Great time. Ben Kiger came by. His game had some rust but by the end of the night his pull was stroking smooth and long. It was good to see Ben there. Oh, and congrats on the engagement. Shauna was there with him.
John JB Scully was shooting his crafty stuff: angles and sliders and that wicked looks-like-a-blown-pullshot pullkick. He told me later that he shoots his roller when he's in a tournament but uses the tricky stuff when he's not. GREAT! Just when I thought I was getting somewhere against him. Oh, well...
Kenny O. is so consistent. It's scary sometimes. And when his 5 is hot (like tonight) he is a spectacle to watch. He had three women on those high chairs sitting an watching him at one time. Go KO!
Adrienne (Adrienne McCormack) was bricking everybody but when I had a chance to be her partner, I put her up front and encouraged her to shoot that push. She's got is down pretty good from the 2 so why not?
We played some more locals and encouraged them to play more and maybe get involved. I hope they all come back on a consistent basis and get to love the game. That would be exciting!
Love to see you there!

The Dubliners (Casey, Tom and Adam) won their match on Tuesday. We played the other team out of the Dubliner. Our handicap climbed from last week and our opponent's handicap had lowered so we had to give up a bunch of points. Oh well, that's league play! We had great time, got to know John, Matt and Jeff a little more and played some good foosball. Sometimes I can't believe Tom Husband's pull shot. That shot goes so deep and makes that loud "Pop" almost before the ball leaves his man (seemingly). I really think sometimes that it is breaking the sound barrier.
The guys told me about the Rose and Crown at 628 East Adams Street. From what I hear it has 2 foos tables (neither tornado). I think I'll pop by there sometime and check them out.
Anyhow we have won two nights so far.

I don't know where they got the band. I've heard them before and Age (Adrienne McCormack) told me that she recognized the lead singer. Anyhow, I felt strongly that they sucked. I usually tell John JB Scully if a band is good or not, just so he knows.
Foosball was fun. Mike Miller was doing his rolling pull and that sweet pull-push all night. Everybody knew he could do it but he still scores with it.
Kenny O was telling us about how he normally aims his roller for the edges but now has been practicing his shorts and straight. Along with his euro series, he's trouble!
Oh, and Mike Miller's 2 rod rolling push banks from both sides (and sometimes double-bank) are his new tool. He said that without smiling so I believe him.
We all spent some time talking about the various league teams experiences we have been having and strategies to beat the other teams. I'm getting all tooled up to do great things in the league.
Anyhow, great food, great beer and I-still-can't-believe crowds of 21-30 something women hang out in the Dubliner on Friday nights.
You should too!

Casa Grande is a town right in between Phoenix (Mesa) and Tucson. There's not much going on there but there is quite bit going on in PHX and Tucson, each about an hour away. You can take a look at the "places to play" and the "tournaments" sections of this website. It's pretty well up to date and it will give you a chance to check out the local scene.

We had a great time. Good band, cold brews, Tornado table with a light and a bunch of people in the place.
Probably what I enjoyed most was watching Age (Adrienne McCormack) grow in her foosball skills. She has been learning and applying that knowledge so fast! It's both a pleasure and a pain to play foos with her: the pleasure is watching her develop, the pain is having her brick and shoot you (it was really painful tonight). Now that she's getting good, I would like to take full credit for her being dangerous, but alas, I cannot. She's been sparring with Billy Noland, Kenny Oglesby and who ever else she might have jumped in front of. Anyhow, watch out for that push shot and soon she'll have a roller.
I was talking to one of the league players this week and I guess there is some confusion about the Friday night format. Pickup games are a throwback from the 70's and 80's when there was a foosball table in every bar and a group of locals who knew that nobody could beat them on their own table. There is no entry fee, no sign ups, no compulsory playing, it's just come on in anytime you want, put your quarters on the table and when you turn in up, grab a partner (any body standing around if you didn't bring your own) and play until you lose. You could possibly hold the table all night (but I'm there so that won't happen).
Anyhow, I heard Mike Sames was there a couple of weeks ago when I couldn't make it. From what I hear between he and his friend they won every single game all night. Good going, Mike!!
So bring some quarters, a thirst, your wraps and a couple of friends (if you wish) and stroll on over to the Dubliner in North Phoenix (right off the 51) this week.
Age will brick you too! |
