League is still the shiznitz.

As many know, starting the league was my primary focus the first time I lived here in Phoenix. Initially, the Foosball community was very loose and unorganized. There was a focus upon established players with no real means to cultivate younger talent and establish a firm footing for the game. This was odd to me given how many great players there were/are in the area, and how much potential the area had simply due to population size. Well, that, and the fact that I lived in Colorado and Western Wisconsin (near the Twin Cities of Minnesota) where I was heavily involved with league play and experienced the results.
Getting it started was not the easiest thing, but once it began it has slowly grown to become greater than I initially envisioned...largely thanks to Billy. The hours upon hours of coding and networking Billy has done is simply staggering. Not just for the League, but for Phoenix Foosball in general. This stuff deserves recognition. Too many times I have to listen to someone upset about this or that, whilst noting that said individual voicing such grievances does literally nothing to help the Foosball community. Even so, Billy will often listen to negative criticism to improve upon our system. Something I am not sure I would be capable of.
Since I moved back, I have not been in the position to play, even as a sub. Yet, tonight, I played in my first league event since around 2005. Long story short, it was a blast. It is STILL the BEST means available for you to improve your game. I have seen many players in this area become something they never would have if not for League play. So, support it! Keep playing it! And, last but by no means the least, recognize the fact that you live in an area that even has it! This is something that everyone should be highly appreciative about. I have lived in so many damn places where Foosball is only a historical fact rather than a living, breathing, monster that it can become.
Also, huge thanks to Casey and Tom for having me as a sub...but, mostly, thanks to Casey since he bought me beers! |

Just wanted to thank everyone that showed up tonight. The owner was fairly upset at the loss of money the PPV UFC event was, but when he came by the foos tables and noticed all of us there with multiple drinks taking up all the cup holders, his mood greatly improved! Its a very good thing when our activities make the owner happy. Thus, once again, thank you to all that participated in both the foos and the beverages! edited by JRhode on 11/16/2014 |

Just an FYI concerning texts
Jesse RhodeAdministrator
|
The messages that are going out from our site, and our phones, are no longer being sent properly. This seems to be a regional problem of late. The phone carriers seem to be messing with how messages are delivered throughout the Phoenix valley. This is not only in regard to Arizona Foosball, to clarify. Regular text messages amongst ourselves can even be delivered to your phone in a manner that easily defeats our "smartphones". The phone number will still be correct, yet the text/message may appear on your device as someone you do not know as your normal contact info presented for that individual will not be displayed.
I confirmed this with many others over the past week, and even had it pointed out to me tonight by a fellow fooser. So, we are aware of the problem, but please understand that as far as messages from us, or your fellow foosers, they may come across rather wonkey on your device and it is out of our control to correct the matter. Whatever it is that the powers that be are doing, let us all hope it is resolved quickly. |

Rules be damned?
Jesse RhodeAdministrator

Casey,
You are absolutely correct in this matter. Once a match starts, the adherence to the rules is highly important in order to improve. Sure, there are times that issues come up that all of us can understand and leeway is granted. However, timeouts are a crucial aspect of the game. The importance of them is often overlooked by many players. When to call them, why, and what the rule actually is are HIGHLY critical skills to learn and utilize.
It is well known that some players play much faster than others. This is an aspect of their game that often works towards that players advantage. I, for example, play fast. When I do so, and when I'm on a roll, a smart opposing team may call timeouts just to throw me out of my rhythm. At the same time, and in consideration of this fact, I am often highly cognizant of the time being taken away from me and pay attention to the 30 second rule. "They" called the timeout to cool me off, but I am not going to simply allow "them" to wallow around past the 30 second rule while they strategize. Well, to be perfectly honest, I usually give it 60 seconds prior to saying anything since 30 seconds seems awful short for a timeout (just my opinion).
On the other hand, there are players that simply play slow and methodical. This is one of them situations that is difficult for players such as myself. And, to clarify, I firmly believe there is nothing wrong with this style of play as it is extremely effective against fast players. However, when this occurs, I tend to pay extra attention to the timeout rule as the juxtaposition of play styles becomes highly relevant to the eventual winner.
Look, it is really quite simple. Even in league, everyone should be doing their utmost to follow the rules. This is the ONLY way to improve all aspects of ones game. That being said, no one needs to be an asshole about it. But, if someone starts calling rules, then ALL rules should come into effect from that point forward. Pull out a smartphone, have one player from each team managing the device, and let the games commence. If there is a mentoring situation, then explain what is occurring as it happens while maintaining adherence to the rules as much as possible.
I don't know whom you played Casey. Nor do I know if what you are saying could be seen in a different light by your opponents in this particular situation. But, once issues concerning rules are brought up in a contentious manner, then it becomes paramount for all parties involved to find the most effective method to diffuse the situation. And, in my opinion, the most effective means to address the situation is to abide by all rules from that point forward in a joint manner.

I really just need to know one thing about this post (already replied to your other post in league chat), what do you mean by threatened? Because, if you were threatened with violence, then there is going to be some major changes in how we will address this situation as league administrators. Grats to all the winners! Chris and Mike! DAMN! Pat...what the fuck are you doing in an amateur tournament?! Still...that is SweeEETnesS!. But, truth be told, PRO SINGLES victory?! Holy shit Zeke! That is truly impressive stuff man. And, you earned it. Hard work pays off. Unreal Foos for life!
Furthermore, grats to all our players that went and played their assess off. The results I have seen speak volumes towards our general ability to play this silly game we love. Hell, we had people that went just to watch! Please, recognize the importance of that act for our entire Foosball community.
In other words, those are excellent results of course, but even beyond the winners, AZ Foosball is really making a mark all together. Incredible to see, but kinda easy to understand. This is one of the best Foosball communities I have seen to date. And,due to my traveling complex, I have seen quite a few communities. Its truly nice to be part of a community that knows that these results are the product of the acceptance of obsession into our lives. edited by JRhode on 3/22/2015 |

This is a highly complicated issue. Bars want us to spend money, and that makes perfect god damn sense. On the other hand, many do not have the disposable funds to blow on over priced food and beverages at a bar. Some simply have no desire to spend money on anything in a bar save for foosball. In addition, we have the extra concerns about work, family, life, and a probable DUI in order to support bars in the manner they wish.
However, we still love the game, so what do we do? That's the obvious crunch. How much are we willing to give up for foosball? Are we ignoring the needs of the establishment when we have players that don't purchase anything? Or are them players simply being responsible adults more concerned about other aspects of life while still feeding the beast that is foosball?
Here is the reality check though...if we don't spend money, we will have very little foos, if any at all. Its that simple.
Given the state of my health, all my funds are wrapped up in trying to fix things. Thus, I can't afford to spend money on bars/foosball at the same time. Once I recognized this, I stopped playing (well, that and admitting I cant play for shit while high). I had to make decisions regarding my health...how I was going to manage it, and what I needed to do in order to manage it.
In other words, make a god damn choice. Either support foos by supporting the site your playing at, or stay the fuck home. Can't afford to play league/Dukes/Stingers/Loft? Then don't. Is this hard to swallow?! God damn right it is...I feel that pain every day I am forced to sideline myself from what I consider to be my passion. Hard to swallow, depressing, and damn near impossible. Yet, it IS the way of things. As much as I hate it, as much as I wish I could head on down to the bar to play, I simply can not more often than not.
To conclude, I feel the need to point out that I am no longer involved in any decisions regarding foosball in Arizona. I have no financial stake in this at all. So, please do not view this as a message from Arizona Foosball. This is simply my own opinion. And, honestly, my opinion means next to nothing when it comes to foosball lately, so take everything I said with a grain of salt. Just, please, recognize the reality of things. I hope to eventually get to a state where I could play again on a regular basis...would suck if there was nothing to return to because of people not considering all aspects of the situation. |
