It would have been nice if it was the same weekend. Splitting into two weekends not so nice. ...You mean for YOU, right? LOL! We didn't expect many out of towners to play in this, so we tailored it to suit the local players - who prefer to do it over two weekends.
That said, do you think if this were modified to a Friday/Saturday/Sunday format it would draw a significant number from out of state/town? We could consider doing that next time around! |

This is going to be a fun event. Big Brad and I are going to smash every name on this list!!
Holy cow, that would be an epic feat! There must be 200 players listed here. It would be incredible to even PLAY all of them. And say, e.g., that just ONE of these players lost to you 4-5, 5-4, 5-4, you probably couldn't really say you "smashed" every player. So, if you indeed "smashed every player on this list", I would say "Fuck! Did you see what Jim and Brad did? That was FUCKING amazing."
...Just saying. |

Billy Pappas Nearing Final Table at WSOP!

(To those who live under a rock and may not yet have heard):
There are now only 25 players remaining (out of 6,600 entrants) in the 2014 World Series of Poker main event ($10,000,000 for first place). Foosball's own Billy Pappas is currently sitting in 4th place in one of the remaining 3 tables with a nice stack of chips!
Check out the chip count, etc., here: http://www.wsop.com/tournaments/chipcounts.asp?rr=5&grid=1052&tid=13665&dayof=
I don't get the poker matches on TV at home. I'm planning on heading out today to try and watch the kid in action at a nearby pub; call/text me if you'd like to join!

So Dozer is ranked as an Expert?? I know you are doing a local ranking, and it would make sense if it were not for the fact that you have Johny Valles, Gary Cooper, Eric Borkavec, Tim Hicks, Pat Hudson, TJ, Joe Stock, Cowbow, JB, yourself, etc as experts as well? All you should be local Pros. Dozer has been playing for about 3-4 years, and hasn't won anything other than a few Tucson local tourneys, of which we don't have anymore. edited by zekefooser on 7/19/2014
Hey Zeke - you may be right about Dozer; I don't know him too well and just took a guess actually for his ranking. He did place 2nd in the Big Sting in a field of 26 teams ( http://www.arizonafoosball.com/forums/jitbit/messages.aspx?TopicID=1169 ) - even ahead of the Zekinator! I've been messaging him to try to get him ranked right for this event, along with Bankin' Bill.
As far as where the top experts belong: that was actually the biggest issue in our "points committee". In the end, we decided to leave those guys in expert for a few reasons, but we certainly agree that the issue merits debate.
For the immediate topic, we'd really appreciate your input! ... So, we've left the high experts/low pros in the expert division. However, as far as placing Dozer goes, it seems the issue is where we've drawn the line at the low end. You know many of the Phoenix players - if you look over the list to see about where we've made the Amateur/Expert cutoff, where do you feel he and Bill truly belong? |

By your logic, you won the event so you should be a pro. Dozer played with Gary, enough said. Also, not like anybody would actually put any stock to doing well in a specialty event like that one. Look at where Nick finished in that event, does that mean he should be an expert? Chambie won Expert doubles at AZ state, which is a solid event. TJ and Joe are typically one of the better BYP teams.
Hey, slow down, Tex! This is a non sequitur. Saying "a player who finished 2nd place in an open event with 26 teams and without a pro partner may be seriously considered for ranking X" is not equivalent to saying "anyone who placed higher than a player of ranking X is automatically ranked >= than X".
It's a judgment call in the end. I'm simply saying that it find it unlikely that a true "amateur" could pull that off (especially in a "roto" event, where an amateur can't stay in the goal). ...Regardless, it's all I had to go on
zekefooser wrote:
...the only "pro" players are Nick and Swan. If anything, make those guys Pro Masters and move up the experienced players to Pro. Unless maybe you give free entry fees to "pros" and you want to make it a very exclusive rank.
...sensible enough. But that was the point of our "points committee" - to decide exactly those issues. In the end, we opted as we did for a different set of reasons.
Emails and forum posts tend to come across the wrong way sometimes, so don't think I'm hollering at you or something. LOL! I truly appreciate your opinion, and we're just trying to get everyone in the right place. When you really think about it, it's not overly difficult to approximate player levels with a few decent resources; the essential issue really comes down to where you place the lines between the respective divisions. edited by BillyBoy on 7/21/2014 |

Thanks Rick. Let me summarize things for the lazy readers out there, and then cast a little bit of light on a related issue...
SUMMARY FOR LAZY READERS: So, all things considered and after talking to a lot more people, it turns out that Dozer does fit comfortably into the expert division, and would fit into that division no matter how we "adjusted" it. (The only variation that would change this is if we decided to incorporate a "amount of time played" factor in the rankings. Currently, it is based solely upon playing ability.)
As I've mentioned a few times, the big issue here really comes down to one thing: should the higher experts be moved to pro? (Or possibly, as Ricky implies, this might be modified to "should the low bar be raised for amateur and expert, but lowered for pro?".)
Here, I really am forced to restate what I've said already: this is the point of a "points committee". The added discussion from Zeke, Casey, and Ricky are wonderful. However, I firmly believe that such a discussion is by far most efficient and productive in a different environment and not necessarily public. These issues need to be batted around and hammered out via real and active debate. I would love to have had you guys in on that, but at the time we had to resolve the issues with the committee that "signed up".
I'm all for what is going to ultimately bring the most success, and create the most fun for the most people. If our current committee (Mike Sames, Brad, myself) would like to re-open the rankings debate and include Ricky, Casey, Zeke, et alia, that is cool with me. It may or may not be a bit late to do so for this event. You guys chime in and let's either do it right away, or at least agree on how and when we'll go about it on the next rendition.
Casting of light: The following is partially applicable to the thread at hand; it applies more generally to issues here as a whole, but is worth inserting here as a bit of useful trivia.
I am not exaggerating when I state that the active participation and response rate for matters such as this in the general foosball community is nearly non-existent. Whenever a request is made for input or assistance of any kind, whether through forum posts, e-mails, SMS/MMS, facebook, polls, flyers, phone calls, one-on-one conversation, or shouting in public (or all of these at once), the response rate is below 1%, and most often it is 0%. I do not know the reason for this, but I assure you this is the case. That said, in nearly all cases where such a request has been made for assistance or opinions, etc., to no avail, and when the time of said request has long expired and the applicable event is imminent or has already begun, THEN we get the input - but much too late. Just one example (among hundreds) would be the e-mail I sent out yesterday prompting players to pre-register for the Super Doubles to save money. This e-mail hit over 400 players in the Phoenix and Tucson regions. Only ONE person actually registered, and not a single person responded to the e-mail with any questions. Yet, I can guarantee you that starting Friday, many players will ask for the discounted package price, and questions and complaints will ramp up.
It is important to realize that players as a whole have historically done very, very, VERY little in the way of participating in a timely and productive fashion to the construction and organization of the various events regardless of the efforts made to bring them in. So we are forced to do these things ourselves with little input, or they wouldn't happen at all.
My point here is not to lament this odd phenomenon, but to provide a perspective to players which was probably missing. And then to say "Hey, your input IS wanted! Please get involved - early and often - to help with productive discussion. Do not wait until after you've lost your first match edited by BillyBoy on 7/22/2014 |
