@Quarter: I think you are referring to the fact that the bonus points do not seem to always be awarded. This is due to the fact that the bonus points for rank are not applied in handicapped events (e.g., "Handicapped BYP", "12 Limited", etc.). This was determined at the start of the tour, but I just noticed that it was left out of the rules; I've updated the rules to reflect this.

@Joe: I agree. Assuming the directors approve that change, we'll likely introduce it in the next session.

@Quarter: It is hard to say specifically when/if this has occurred, but the potential exists in the current rule set. In fact, it will always be there in a strict sense, but we can at least diminish the motivation to do so in the tour.

Moral issues aside, it is a risky move nonetheless in a DYP, and unlikely in a BYP. Hi-low style events are the the most prone, since there will always be two players who know they have a new entry if they lose.

On a positive note, I noticed that last week at the Moon there was an elimination match, where a loser would gain re-entry, between an AM/BEG team and a team with a beginner and a strong expert, with the current tour leader waiting in the wings as x-man. In that match the expert had significant motivation to go out and draw for a strong shot at winning the tournament, but played for the win nonetheless. It's good to see that once in awhile smile

Joe I agree with you as well. Billy I think that change should be immediate for the rest of the tour.

LOL! That's the real reason why I said we would "likely introduce it in the next session" - because I figured some might move to do it now. smile

We can do that if all concur; my only arguments against it are:

1. the extra work to make the change
2. the "ugliness" of changing the points algorithm mid-session, and applying two different points rules to the same session. (Yes, I'm a bit OCD. Haha!)

Also, I'm sure most would agree that it would not be fair to make it retroactive, and strip any points that may (or may not) have already been earned in this way.

@Quarter: Your second suggestion is the solution we've been talking about.

As far as forcing a player out to make the teams even - I am against it for several reasons. One of them is that I don't feel that having "even teams" outweighs the value of allowing anyone who shows up to play. As with most issues, there are pros and cons. As anyone who's stuck with this game for awhile knows, our primary concern has always been to gain more players - not to send them home!

I agree with @Quarter. If an X happens, there should be an opportunity for a player to back out of the event.

There is!

graykat777 wrote:
I am not sure how the X is determined right now. Is X always the last to sign up? Or do we determine the X upon the draw: last name/number drawn is the X?

Usually it's by the draw. Occasionally it is an "offer" to someone who wants in but is going to be late.

graykat777 wrote:
I suppose the last to sign up/show up could be confusing because we allow players to be included then wait for them to arrive, a policy that I can indeed appreciate and has worked out pretty well.

Sarcasm alert! I doubt that anyone likes waiting on someone. I guarantee that I like it less than anyone. But as I mentioned to Quarter earlier, there are many variables to consider. I feel that we've balanced it well as of late, both logistically and via our popular sanctions/suspensions system! LOL!

Another alternative to "x-man" is allowing someone to play on two teams. (I don't know what this is called, maybe "y-man"?) I've thought about using that and holding an "auction" for that spot! smile

Some great points here smile

@Brad - I like your take and ideas on rules & officiating moving forward
@Brian - I think your rules clinic is a bad ass idea, and it's very cool of you to do this at the Foos Bowl
@Jesse - your comments here and in the league section are not only appropriate/relevant to the present situation, but informative on their own in the general sense
