Tucson vs. Phoenix, Jan. 24, 2009

There was some talk after the last event in Tucson did not finish in time, and Dan decided he would not host a 3pm event anymore. However, here are some thoughts:

Due to running over a few times in the past, our latest schedule was set up to run at 3:00, 4:30, & 6:30 for each event, respectively. The last time we did this (September, in Phoenix), we did finish all events, however we had to do quite a few "race-to-7" games. It should be noted, however, that our "early event" was a full double-elimination ROOKIE-ONLY draw, we had 3 tables instead of 4, and we got a VERY large turnout (40-45 people).

The last Tucson event went back to our previous schedule (3:00, 5:00, 7:00) - I don't know if this was intentional or if Dan forgot that we had adjusted it the last time. Tucson did have four tables, but I've found that the extra table only marginally helps to speed up a tournament of the average size that we have. This is because we normally only manage to use all four at once in the first round of the first event. Of course, the fourth is very handy for pick-up games, but I'm just making the point that it only helps to speed the tourney to a small degree. I think the start times being pushed back, and the double-elimination setup of the 3:00 event were the main culprits.

All this said, I don't think the 3:00 event is any trouble as long as it's started on time and set up to run quickly (e.g., single-elimination), and the main events are scheduled at the new times.

The reason I like to keep the early event is that I believe it actually helps the event to run a bit better. This is because having an early event gets some of the players IN THE BUILDING earlier. (Granted, not all of them, but at least a fair number of them.)

So, if we run this as I've described above, and still have a problem, then of course I will consider dropping it the next time. You may have noticed that to be on the safe side, I also posted the 3:00 as a "1-Ball" tournament (unless it gets voted off via the poll on the other thread smile ).

I don't mind a 12pm start. We haven't been doing this, though, because, in years past foosers have refused to show up at those times. We set the hours we do for one main reason, which basically comes down to "what time will the most players actually show up?". An analogy would be the many times we tried to start Saturday tournaments at 7:00, and no matter how long we kept at that start time, no one ever showed up till 8 or 9. Not even once were we able to begin at 7pm.

We can try it again if enough people seem to like the idea. But all I am saying is that if we do it, and then it doesn't work out that well, and then we move away from it afterward, a year from now someone will ask the same question and we will then rinse and repeat.

Ok, I made a small compromise and moved the times to 2:00, 4:00, 6:00.

Btw, there is also another reason that we've had the later start for doubles. This is because there are people who expect an 8pm tourney every Saturday and may not have any idea that we've scheduled the special event. So starting that one closer to that time allows some of those guys to still make it in.

Just some info.

Yes, Corey. The way run the "Tucson vs. Phoenix" event is to tally points scored by players from each city to see who gets the trophy. But these players are free to play or team up any way they want. Occasionally a team will be a Tucson-Phoenix evil hybrid, essentially just resulting in a points wash for that team. The point is, of course you guys can play, and it won't cause any problems.

Let us know if you are coming up, running behind, etc., or if you need a free place to crash or something.

2009 League Kicks Off Jan. 20/21

Everything is set up and in line to kick off a great season, with a full 16 teams and more prize money, etc., than ever, the beginning of next week. I am looking very much forward to this season, as I'm sure it will be the best so far.

The official schedule, standings, & other doc's are now online under the "Leagues" section. So you can start plotting your plan of attack.

In the meantime, please take this time to sort out your team names & team captains and send them to us so we can update the schedule, standings, etc.

On league fees: the cost for the league is $45 for the full season. You may also pay 2 installments of $25 (at the start and the midpoint of the season) if it better suits you. You can pay now by mailing a check (made out to "Bill Nolan") to:

Bill Nolan
2704 E. Turney Ave. #7
Phoenix, AZ 85016

…or you can wait till the league begins and pay in person (through Jeremy Wettlaufer, Bill Nolan, or Brad Szymalak), or simply leave cash or check in one of the locked league "drop boxes" mounted beneath one table at each location.

See you guys & gals out there soon. Please call us if you have any questions.

Same as always. I added entry fees above.

Don't know what you mean by format. Not sure if 1-ball is usually single or double elim. Seems counter intuitive to have 1 ball as double elim, though. But whatever is the norm.

Oh, I see.

Of course, we would prefer no race-to-7. Unfortunately, it is often unavoidable. I prefer to decide that on scene, though, since it depends on many things. We are also considering bringing in another table, and maybe even two. Just depends on what the turnout looks like. I think we've actually approached this the right way (judging on scene), but we just need to be more conservative. I have probably been more guilty of this than you guys. This is because I hate those damned rounds myself, but I've been disciplining myself and getting it closer. I still sometimes require someone like Mike Sames to smack me and back things off a bit. (Actually, Mike generally has a pretty good knack of nailing the event timing, so if he is there, just prompt him to help set up those early rounds.)

You know, I doubt it would be very hard to devise a decent "formula" for time required based on only a few inputs: (e.g., #players, #events, #tables, amt. time per game(for both types-normal & race-to-7) , double/single elim., etc.) It would just take a little record-keeping over a few events to nail it down. I am just too lazy to do it smile Might also have to add a "Scott Young" variable as well.

Great turnout and a lot of fun. Tucson brought a lot of players out, but somehow Phoenix had one of those magic nights and really played great, taking back the trophy for the next couple months.

Paul made it out this time. I never got to play with him, but it looked like he played quite a few pickup games with Doug, Ben Z., Scott Y., Zeke, John D., and others.

How is his game now?

All of this was hashed over for days by various referees, etc., on the main board awhile ago. Of course, when Phil moved the board a few months ago, he was unable to move the previous posts with it, so all of such things were lost.

Anyhow, you should put it up there as well. I think that board gets a lot more action.
