John - If you are still going to be in town and you are still looking for a partner, I would be happy to partner with you. This is Bob Duncan, and we have played against each other at the Loft a few times. I think I'm rated around a 3.2 or thereabouts. Took first place with Gary last week at Stingers if you want to see my picture to jog your memory about who I am...Let me know, otherwise I will be looking for another partner.... |

I've been noticing the improvement of the newer players to the foosball family here in Phoenix and I'd like to throw in some thoughts I've had on improving their skills. First and foremost on the list would be practice. A LOT. The more time you spend practicing, especially the things that don't seem like much fun at the time ( such as the 5 bar ball control and passing ), the more fun you will have in actual games when your time of possession and shot opportunities will dramatically increase. When practicing, have a goal in mind. Practice a pass series, practice ball control on all rods, practice sitting on the ball as you would in a game, and practice your shot. For hours. Make it muscle memory. Practice for precise execution, slowly and smoothly, with the proper mechanics first. The speed will come with repetition. Get it right to begin with, it's much easier to learn to do something correctly than it is to go back and change it later. Second on the list is observing. We have some really good players in Phoenix. Watch them play. Watch what they do, how they do it, what there body position is when passing, blocking, and shooting, how they transition during singles, what their strategy is....everything they do. This will have a two-fold effect. You will see how the experts play and your body / mind connection will incorporate this into your own game. And, you will also learn their tells, weaknesses, timing, rhythms, and preferences for the times you have to play against them. Third on the list is to pick people's brains. Ask questions. Ask how people practice, how often, for how long, what do they practice, why they do different things in matches. Also, ask them what you can do to improve your game. Virtually everyone here would be more than willing to help the rookies if they ever ask the questions. Hopefully, by posting this, some of the younger ( and older....lol ) rookies will raise their game to expert level and the overall level of competition of foosball in Arizona will continue to improve. edited by Quarter Horse on 12/21/2015 |

This forum message is the first I've heard of a New Mexico tourney. How was it advertised here in Phoenix? Getting the word out to the players might also be part of the problem... |

I have to agree with Brad. This is easily the best thread we've had on here for a long time. Interesting debate about rankings, shows just how difficult it is to remain objective and still try and be fair, especially when the people doing the ranking are in the midst of the players themselves. I'm just fortunate to be so far down on the amateur list that none of this will effect me.....lol |

I'm thinking it should be fairly easy to show, on a spreadsheeet, what everyone's points are for local tournaments, netfoos tournaments, and the league ratings, as well as any weighting that's been done in each category. As well as the dividing line between ranking levels. That information has to be on a spreadsheet somewhere right now to have been able to come up with a comprehensive ranking list. Make the information available to everyone and all the arguments and discussions about a person's rank will come to an end. Only argument might be if there is weighting involved and how it was derived. Just a thought, I seriously doubt that this will happen. After all, most of the foosers in Phoenix are just too damn stoopid to understand anything so complicated.....lol ...Right? |

Also, I don't think for half a second that Brad and Ricky are guaranteed a win in the Experts division. There are no guarantees, unless one of the teams playing just rolls over and plays dead. Tha's why it's foosball....Tons of skill involved and a little bit of luck... |

Brad - I would love to have a copy of the points breakdown. I don't like making comments like I did about Age being an amateur and not a beginner and then realizing it was a comment made in pure ignorance. Just a seat of the pants assessment that may or may not have anything to do with reality. I think that everyone involved with putting the tournaments and leagues together has been doing an awesome job. We are the model for the entire country for the successful way to grow a foos community. Is it perfect? Nope, it's being done by people and people aren't perfect. Still the best thing going for foos though. Keep up the great work. And post the damn picture of the winners from Jan 1st of this year....lol To some people, ( myself mostly ) having your name and picture in lights means a lot more than the money won at the events. Also.....it's piece....not peace...let me know if you need an editor.....lol |
