Casey -
It is interesting you bring this up as I have seen more of this in tournament play as well. As we move forward I have personally decided to adopt the mentality of...the rules are the rules.
I have been asked to ref more than usually lately and have not had a very good idea what all the rules and calls should be, however I have taken it upon myself to educate my self and become more familiar with all the rules. http://www.foosball.com/learn/rules/ustsa/
I honestly believe that we, meaning Arizona Foosball and all the players, need to take a more strict stance when playing the game for several reasons. First off these are cash games and should be treated as such. There are reasons why the rules are what they are and they should be respected. Also if players play outside Arizona they need to be prepared and educated on what the rules are and how to properly follow them.
With that said I am asking that all players attending the Cactus Moon tournies to make sure they are acquainted with the rules and begin to self officiate as Casey suggested. As the TD I will begin to strictly enforce game time limits such as time outs, and starting matches in a timely manner. I will ask that experienced players begin to call the beginner and rookie players on their infractions. I typically do not and try to teach them when I have a chance, however as an athlete losing a possession or two, serves as a better teacher than reminding them of the rule and then letting them get away with it.
I really have to thank Brian S for making me more aware of this. Hopefully everyone will take it upon themselves to learn the rules and show some sportsmanship by calling themselves on them even when it is very tough to do so.
Respectfully,

Jessie posted this in another fourm and since it involves more than league I thought it should be here as well...
Casey,
You are absolutely correct in this matter. Once a match starts, the adherence to the rules is highly important in order to improve. Sure, there are times that issues come up that all of us can understand and leeway is granted. However, timeouts are a crucial aspect of the game. The importance of them is often overlooked by many players. When to call them, why, and what the rule actually is are HIGHLY critical skills to learn and utilize.
It is well known that some players play much faster than others. This is an aspect of their game that often works towards that players advantage. I, for example, play fast. When I do so, and when I'm on a roll, a smart opposing team may call timeouts just to throw me out of my rhythm. At the same time, and in consideration of this fact, I am often highly cognizant of the time being taken away from me and pay attention to the 30 second rule. "They" called the timeout to cool me off, but I am not going to simply allow "them" to wallow around past the 30 second rule while they strategize. Well, to be perfectly honest, I usually give it 60 seconds prior to saying anything since 30 seconds seems awful short for a timeout (just my opinion).
On the other hand, there are players that simply play slow and methodical. This is one of them situations that is difficult for players such as myself. And, to clarify, I firmly believe there is nothing wrong with this style of play as it is extremely effective against fast players. However, when this occurs, I tend to pay extra attention to the timeout rule as the juxtaposition of play styles becomes highly relevant to the eventual winner.
Look, it is really quite simple. Even in league, everyone should be doing their utmost to follow the rules. This is the ONLY way to improve all aspects of ones game. That being said, no one needs to be an asshole about it. But, if someone starts calling rules, then ALL rules should come into effect from that point forward. Pull out a smartphone, have one player from each team managing the device, and let the games commence. If there is a mentoring situation, then explain what is occurring as it happens while maintaining adherence to the rules as much as possible.
I don't know whom you played Casey. Nor do I know if what you are saying could be seen in a different light by your opponents in this particular situation. But, once issues concerning rules are brought up in a contentious manner, then it becomes paramount for all parties involved to find the most effective method to diffuse the situation. And, in my opinion, the most effective means to address the situation is to abide by all rules from that point forward in a joint manner.

Foosball is continuing to grow and expand in AZ and your support is greatly appreciated. However with the bigger tournaments there are some other problems happening that need to be dealt with in order to keep the events running smoothly. First off to many people are showing up right at 8:30 which is holding up the tournament as starting time was pushed back to almost 9 PM. With that said I am asking that everyone be on the premises and register for your event 15 minutes prior to the starting time, if not you are at risk of not getting in the tournament. It is your responsibility to find the TD and register not visa versa. Also I was chasing down way to many people to get them to start their matches this week. From now on once a match is called if a team does not show up in the first 5 minutes it will be a game forfeit, if 10 minutes go by it will be the match. In the past this has not been as big an issue however we are averaging around 11 - 13 teams each week for the past two months so I have to implement this change. Again it is not the TD's responsibility to hunt down and inform the players. Everyone needs to check the bracket and see if their match is close to coming up. If you plan on leaving the premises for a bit make sure you ask the TD and ensure your match will not be starting when you are gone.
I hope everyone understands that I am doing this for the betterment of the tournament and AZ Foosball, I also realize that I sometimes take more time than allotted and I can ensure that I will hold myself to these standards as well.

Handicap BYP Tonite!

Hey all just a reminder it is the 5th Friday of the month meaning the return of the Handicap BYP at the moon. We use the chip system. Pros - 0, Ex - 1, Am - 2, Beg - 3.
So a Pro/EX team gets 1 chip where a Beg/Beg team gets 6. Meaning if they play each other the Beg/Beg team gets 5 chips. Chips can be traded for points. Max of two per game. Chips may be used during the start of a point or during a time out called by the team with the chips. Use of chips does not affect possession at all.
Hope to see you all on this rainy day.

Mike -
I do not recall making that change. The last change I made to this event was not allowing teams to take the point to win the game.
I think changing that rule in the manner you described would benefit the stronger players. Since these players generally do rather well in this format I see no reason to change the rules for their benefit.
When I do make a rule change I try to get as many opinions as I can as to not make the change as a knee jerk reaction where the solution is worse than the original problem. I only posted the rules tonight as a reminder since we only play this event about once every three months at the moon.
Nice to see you out the other night, hope you consider playing more often.

Interesting comments from everyone. I appreciate the discussion on an open forum and i want to respond to everyone.
Mike you make some good points and since i only run this event once every three months and dont have all the rules for this event written down that is my fault and i will fix that this weekend. However this event and rules regarding it have been developed as i have learned from previous events and from player input. The major complaint when we first began was teams with a large advantage in chips were taking 3 and 4 points per game. This lead to multiple complaints which directly lead to limiting the number of points per game a team can take. We originally allowed teams to take points to win a game but not the match. We eliminated this again due to multiple complaints and replaces it with the ability to take points on a time out but not to win a game or a match. My main point here is that i do hear the complaints and try my best to keep it fair however sometimes we need to live with the lesser of two evils.
The handicapped event is popular amongst the players and gives the less experiences players and opportunity to compete and the results of these events bear that out. Last night two beginners were a point away from playing for king seat. Paul L and Mark played well and Paul won his first tournament at my expense!
Pat sorry you feel the way you do about it however that us the nature of the beast, now i am willing to discuss ways to make it better for everyone and make it fair but provide some constructive crcriticism and not just complaints.
Bottom line foos in AZ is continuing grow and expand so we mustbe doing something right. If you dont like the handicap format dont play. If you do play, play within the established rules and suggest changes you feel will improve the event.
Considering the posts on this board and the comments i heard here is what i plan on doing.
First i will work with bill to make sure that all the information regarding cactum moon events is accurate and updated on the website.
I will solict input from the foosball community regarding handicap events and see if i can come up with a better format.
Bill and i are working together by using both netfoos ELO and a new system using all azfoosball tourney results to come up with an accurate point system for ranking players.
I will conti ue to listen to and consider all your posts and comments to make foos better in az.
I think we all need to remember the lean times in az where we only had one dyp a week and were lucky to attract 5 teams. I appreciate all the support for foos and the work that Billy, Jesse, Kenny, Age, Mike L and so many others that have done to keep foos alive and well in AZ. |

Points Ratings and Cactus Moon Friday 2/20.15

Hello Foosers -
Billy has completed the point rating system for Arizona Foosball and we have our initial point rating completed. It is based on the ELO system, Bill can give you many more details than I. This is just the initial points rating which is based off what we had before in Netfoos combined with all the results from the tournaments in the recently completed Phoenix Tour.
You can find the ratings at....
http://arizonafoosball.com/Tournaments/playerpoints.htm
As always your input regarding these ratings is welcome, however please ask and take the time to learn how these ratings were obtained before you criticize them. In this initial posting we realize that some people may be mis-ranked but we have done our best to correct those obvious problems. Our goal is to come up with a fair and accurate system not biased by personal judgements or estimates of skill level, it is based purely on your results. As we use the system more and get a larger sample size the points will correct themselves. We will use these points for the HOF Warm-up and will continue to update them regularly.
As far as the Cactus Moon events tonight....I wanted to make some changes, just for tonight as several players have requested....
Singles will become a single elimination handicap singles event 3/5 - To win a game the following must happen.... Pros score 7 Experts score 6 Amateurs score 5 Beginners score 4
5 dollar entry fee winner takes all.
Doubles will become a DYP/BYP -
Bring partners will pay as follows Pro/Pro teams 15 each Pro/EX teams 12 each Ex/Ex teams 10 each Ex/Am teams - 8 each Am/Am teams 6 each Beginner or DYP - 5 each.
Sorry about the late announcement regarding the event, we wanted to have the points done ASAP to facilitate this.
Hope to see you all there.
