Nice of you guys to mention the league rules and then not say what they are regarding the stopped ball situation. Mind enlightening those of us that don't have a copy of the league rules lying around? Also, how is the ball served in one ball roller ball? |

Brad - Last night, I had the opportunity to talk to one of the servers for a while about the non-paying foosers. She mentioned that two of the players from the Wednesday night league event were major offenders. No names or descriptions were given. Not ordering anything was part of the issue. The other part, and probably the more serious of the two, was the fact that the two players had a confrontational attitude towards Dukes, Dukes servers, and the eating / drinking policy. I've given the matter a bit of thought and a couple of things came to mind. First off, Al is trying to receive an average revenue of $15 / fooser through food and drink sales. Not a lot of money. No one needs to go there and get shit faced drunk by spending $15 on alcohol during the night. I rarely drink when I'm there. But, it doesn't take much to spend $15....a few drinks or a couple of beers and a bite to eat. Done. Some of our people will spend substantially more than this...some less. They have heartburn when people go in there and stay for hours and only drink water. Kinda reminds me of Cousin Eddie from the Griswold movies...This brings up another point. If the bar is contributing money towards the tourneys, we could let them keep their contribution and make up the difference by raising entry fees or not make it up, just have slightly smaller pots. Other than the money issue, the bigger issue is the one concerning respect for the establishment and the servers. As a group, we should do our best to avoid any and all confrontations with the staff. If there's a problem with the servers ( poor or no service at all, which often happens after 11 PM, poor attitudes, etc ), let Billy or Brad know and they can relay it to Al. They've built the relationship with the guy and are aware of what pushes his buttons. Enough of my inane rambling...Let's do what we can to support Dukes and, in turn, support our tourneys. |

Rules. What a concept.

26. Recalls and Forfeiture Once a match has been called, both teams should report immediately to the designated table. If a team has not reported to the table within three minutes, they should be recalled. A team, upon being recalled, must report immediately to the table in order to stop the forfeiture process. 26.1 A recall is made every three minutes. Penalty for third and subsequent recalls is forfeiture of each game until the match is over. 26.2 If a team has forfeited any games due to recalls, they get the choice of side or serve once play begins. 26.3 Enforcement of this rule is the responsibility of the Tournament Director.
In other words, after 9 minutes, a team would forfeit their first game. I would love to see this rule actually enforced ( especially at Duke's where it's common to play until 2:00 am ) If we are trying to get ready for Vegas, we should learn and play by the same rules that will be in effect there. Just a thought. I seriously doubt that the regular offenders will be called for this... edited by Slam Duncan on 2/1/2017 |

Brad - There is one person on the list that is completely wrong as far as their rating. Adrienne is Not a beginner. She plays a style that is very much a beginner type of play but, that being said, she should not be rated as a beginner any more. Those days are long past. Her stats are: She has played in 475 ( That's right... Four Hundred and Seventy Five ) tournaments since 2009. She has 47 @ 1st place finishes, 48 @ 2nd place finishes, 64 @ 3rd place finishes, and 56 @ 4th place finishes. She was also the first Phoenix Tour winner in the Amateur Division for the inaugural season. It's time for her to learn ball control, passing, and a shot. But Not to reward her with beginner points because she refuses to play a different style. Just my two cents worth... |

Brad - Great playing last Friday! That was the first...and last...time I'll forfeit a match from a bad back. I saw the final breakdown and there's no doubt we could have won the entire tourney. Hopefully, you collected the entire amount for third place.....you deserved it |

Great info Jesse. Glad that you take the time to put all of this out there so people have a better understanding of what's happening in our happy little family of foosers. Personally, I'd like to see more people on this site, whether it's for ideas, congratulations, talking smack or whatever. Facebook sucks up a lot of the foosball communication bandwidth and that's only going to increase. This venue is uniquely ours and the more people using it, the better (read bigger) our group is going to get. There are a lot of players out there and they are involved with different facets of our sport here in the Valley....leagues, tourneys, pick up games, etc. There are some damn good players that I've never even met because I don't participate in leagues. Some people go to the Loft and never go to Dukes. And vice versa. This forum allows us to get to know each other, to share ideas (ideas to help promote and grow foosball are always a good thing), to ask for and provide advice on various aspects of the game. We could become better as individual players and also collectively if we communicated more. For instance, as we watch each other play the game, we learn "tells, weaknesses, strengths, and areas of improvement that would greatly help if the information were shared. Right now, that usually happens, if at all, if the player is on your team and it would help you win a match or a tourney and it's usually a veteran trying to help a rookie. I need help. My game sucks. If anyone has any ideas to help me with my game, I'm all ears. Likewise, I'll be more than willing to help anyone that's receptive to the offer. My two cents worth and I expect some change back.....lol |

A couple of words of advice, might or might not help. Practice. It's important. The more, the better, both alone, playing pick-up games, playing tourneys and leagues, any and all table time helps your game. That being said, the bare basics for practicing alone should include practicing the things you will be doing in a game, focus on passing the ball (easily the most important aspect of the forward game), catching the ball, dribbling the ball and ball control in general, and shooting the ball. Your passes and shots should be executed the same way you would in a game...set the ball up without using your hands, SIT on the ball (15 seconds is a long time, 2 seconds...mot so much), and visualize being in a match, match point, you make the shot you win...Practice doesn't make perfect....perfect practice makes perfect. Work on your weak points. Most people are right handed and don't spend nearly enough time practicing with their left. That's a weakness. The more times you have the ball, the better your odds are of scoring. This is all old news for most of the veterans in the group. |

We need to talk...

Absolutely amazing to see this on the Arizona Foosball website. I guess I'll just go ahead and add my two cents worth since I know everybody out there is dying to know my thoughts.....lol. The Phoenix area foosball crowd is one of the biggest and best in the nation. Period. We have a large group, a lot of young players, numerous venues to play at with different formats for different players, starting with rank newbies and going up to Hall of Fame veterans and everything in between. Pretty much something for everyone. This group has been grown from the Combined efforts of several people....Age and Gary, Kenny, Brad, Billy, Jesse, Bryan, and a few that left the scene before I started playing again. This is just the people that are promoting events, either leagues, tournaments, special events, etc. This isn't counting all the behind the scenes people that have also chipped in to help...The people that volunteer to run tourneys, clean tables, stay late to hand out winnings, tons of unseen and mostly unmentioned acts to contribute to the cause. In my experience, a lot of the negative problems that have come to light with this series of posts are correct - There are issues with table maintenance, lights that are broken or barely functioning, and tables that aren't brand spanking new. My choice to handle those situations has been to either jump in and help maintain the tables or stop going to the venues that constantly have lousy tables to play on. The Loft does a great job with table maintenance, as does Dukes. I have no idea how much Mary would charge for 4 new tables. I'm guessing around $5,500 to $6,000, not counting the shipping. Kinda steep price to pay so that the dozen people or so that are going to major tourneys will have decent tables to play on and tune up their game before the big events. There are also issues with the various personalities involved among the promoters and the way they choose to promote our sport. Different ways of running the tourneys, enforcing start/stop times, rules, payouts, etc. There have been a lot of new ideas presented recently which may or may not improve the scene here in Arizona. The things that will ABSOLUTELY NOT improve foosball in Arizona are the things that were mentioned in these posts...fighting, lying, stealing, cheating (which was actually brought up on Facebook and not in these posts), character assassination, name calling, and complete and a TOTAL lack of professionalism. Really disgusting that our community is portrayed in this manner on a website that can be viewed by anyone in the country. I can't speak for anyone else, but, in my opinion, all of these grievances should have been brought up at an in person, face to face meeting between the parties with the grievances and maybe an arbitrator or referee or three....They weren't. So, our dirty laundry is hanging on the clothesline for everyone to see. Ok, what's the solution to the problem? Phoenix Metro has roughly six million people living in it. Tons of places to put foosball tables and grow a player base. If you want to grow a player base, find venues to put brand new tables and sponsors to help pay for them, find owners and develop relationships that will help promote the sport, implement new and innovative ways to create revenue, increase payouts, by all means get after it. That's what makes this country great...freedom to develop whatever you are capable of developing. The promoters that started in Phoenix have done a really good job, even though it has the problems that it does. Most businesses fail due to a lack of a plan. A plan to grow the business, make changes as needed that won't destroy the customer base if they don't pan out, a plan that looks at all the repercussions of decisions...and a plan that is well defined. If you have ideas and dreams without a timeline, you don't have a plan, you have a wish list. They also fail from infighting, sabotage, and greed. Not to mention personality conflicts of the major players involved. I'm not sure what the solution should be...all I know is that the fighting and name calling has to stop....it's immature, non-productive, and does nothing to improve the situation...
Sorry for the rambling nature of this post, just putting thoughts on paper without a lot of sleep. So, take it for what it's worth....this post and 4 quarters will get you a pick-up game somewhere..... |

I have a question about the Monster DYP formats. When are we going to get a good explanation of how the format works? I've been to two tournaments that use this format and still don't have a clear idea about how it works.....how are partners drawn, how are matches drawn, how many points do you earn for each match played, hoow do you get the same partner twice with this format, and who the winners have been. It would help a lot if we could look at the brackets (or whatever the equivalent is) showing all the matches played, results, and the points assigned for each match to each player, as well as an explanation of how the points are derived. Something other than "it's a computer algorithm".
That is all. |
