Stingers Tournament Schedule

Sorry Billy. The High-Lows designations that JB ran at Main Street were determined by how well JB knew your game, at least when I played. That's why I was in the "low" ranking whenever I played.

So I only went by my experiences. I did not know that there is a ranking list by which High-Low is always determined.

I didn't mean anything by that.

Would you tourney directors mind posting the results from the Friday and Saturday nights?

I know the chart from Cactus Moon on Friday most likely has some broken glass, blood and beer all over it, but it should still be readable.

Thanks,

Spinning the Rod

We (I) had an discussion (argument) regarding spinning the rod. The two of us agreed that the rod was spun, but could not agree on where the ball was to be placed.

Here's the scoop, and please anybody watching this at our league match last night chime in if I describe it incorrectly. So, the goalie had the ball and was clearing. He shot but spun (we agreed) but I said the spot at his 2 rod was the "site of the occurrence" , he disagreed and said that where the ball ended up (after some bouncing around it was on his 3rod) is the "site of occurrence". So his ruling was to give the ball to the opponent on the 5. My ruling as that the ball goes back to the opponents 3. Our discussion centered around if the spin infraction immediatly stops play.

I found this discussion on the foosball board from 2010:
http://foosballboard.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=6640&highlight=spin

Please feel free to chime in!

The article to which I linked mentions "the old rules". The old rules further defines the the instance. The definition, as I had known it for many years, is that the spin infraction stops play. Right now. It does not stop play "as soon as somebody can possibly stop the ball", which was the definition my opponent claimed.

I claim that play stops as soon as a spin is called. I mean, it's like a table jar where the play stops immediatly upon the jar regardless of where the ball ended up once somebody could possibly pin it with a player figure.

And I'm not sure why you said

" The rules say "If a ball is advanced by an illegal spin the opposing team will have the option of continuing play from the current position or to serve the ball. "Without any further explanation one must assume this simply means "wherever the ball is" and does not imply that a player can physically pick it up or stop the ball "wherever it is" (bouncing, rolling, etc.) and play it from THERE. That is, the opposing team can either "play on", or stop play and take it on his/her five. The only thing that seems in question here (but doesn't seem to apply to your situation last night) is how long the opposing team has to claim the ball on their five. Obviously, if they make a play on it, it is obvious; but what if they let it roll around and let the other team swing at it?"

You weren't there to see that, and I was right there watching. If you were told that the opponent was still swinging at the ball to signify continuation, that did not come up in our onsite discussions (argument). I know that was not the case because I was screaming "Spin"! and "Stop!". Our only discussion on the table was where the infraction actually occurred which set up the placement of the ball.

Is there any tournaments or leagues in Prescott?

There have been a number of good players in Prescott over the years. I'm not sure who is up there now. I understand that the Drunken Lass Irish Pub has a table. I'm not sure what brand, I haven't seen it. That may be a nice road trip sometime soon though. I know that the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Institute has a Tornado in the student union. I interviewed for a job up there a couple of years ago.

There is a pub on the west side of Prescott that sits in the shadow of a large Ford dealer ship that had 4 tables at one time, you might want to check that out.

Lizard's bar had a table a few years ago, you might check that out too. It's about a block from the Drunken Lass.

Hope that helps. Maybe you can organize something up there.

Where to play in Mesa?

Jen,

I was at the HOF last week and I was talking to folks about what we have going on here in Arizona. To a person, they were surprised and thrilled to hear it. We have 2 tourneys each week, Friday and Saturday. We have some intermittant tourneys too like the Phoenix-Tucson Challenge (with a travelling trophy). We had eight of our players go to the HOF and bring back what they learned.

We have a league that's been going on now about five years. The leagues have grown the player base like nothing I have ever seen (I've been playing foos for over 30 years). The league means we have competitive foosball in six or seven different locations valley-wide. There are folks who get together at each others homes to play, there are women as well as men playing. We have beginners, intermediate players and old pros. Want Pro-masters? Try Don Swan, Randy Stark and Johnny Valles. Want flavor? We usually have players from Albuquerque, Tucson, El Paso, San Diego and LA come to our larger tournies. Need I say more?

We have quite the community going on here and you would be welcome.

And there is no snow here. I know, I know... you can't keep your beer cold in the trunk of your car like you can in MN, but the palm trees and wonderful seasons (except Summer of course) are enough to pull up roots and get down here. Come soon so you can ease into the Summer.

CU soon!

i am the four time league stud and you are not!

graykat777
This past weekend I won my fourth League Stud in about six seasons. I have set a record that will not be matched for years to come.

From my experience of being the player with the highest winning percentage for so many times I have learned some valuable lessons. The first of which is that I am not that good. I play well, but my success is based upon and supplemented by being a part of a team. The team effort is the reason I do good. I am a team player. You should be one too. If you don't encourage your teammates, if you don't go out of your way to make sure your teammates have everything you can provide to excel themselves, you will not be the league stud. Ever.

If you refuse to put your own self interest aside and work to bring out the best in your teammates I will win the league stud again. I will take it from your grasp. I will leave you longing for the title. I will be the object of your frustration because of your own failure, not because of any virtuosity on my part.

Teamwork is the answer. Here is how you start: When you are in a draw play your best, be a role model, and always notice what your partner is doing right and encourage them. The proper encouragement will instill confidence in your partner. This wil also build your confidence. You will be a better player. When you are there, I'll see you.

Good luck in the coming season.

Casey Nelson

P.S. I want to thank my partners Tom Husband and Josh Oliver for helping me attain this goal. Thanks guys!

I went to the North Central Sports Bar with a friend the other night to check out the place. A couple of folks in the forum have already done so but I wanted to give a full report on the foosball table. Here are some photos:

http://imgur.com/a/D0qLS#0

It's a tornado, so you know it can stand up to some play. The rods were like sandpaper though and the ball was one of those cheap while plastic things you find on an entry level sportcraft or harvard table. I suggest you bring your own. The lighting is iffy, but it does have a clamp-on desk lamp above the table that you can adjust to shine on the playing surface. Be ready for the shadows.

My conclusion is that this table is one to avoid unless you are merely playing casually (and can bring your own foos balls, silicone and cleaning supplies) . Considering the number of good tables around the area I'll steer clear. Closest good table: Dubliners (just 6 minutes north on the 51).

Rules be damned?

graykat777
graykat777
During our most previous league match, my opponent took a time out. Then my opponent conversed with another player (away from the table), then another. Timeouts last 30 seconds, but this timeout was much longer. When I pleaded for the match to continue one of the other players (not playing that evening) momentarily got angry and shouted "You are calling rules?!"

My question is this: Do you, as a league member, believe that the standard rules of foosball play (and sportsmanship) are distinctly different than rules of league play?

I can see if somebody need to go the bathroom, calls time and takes a little longer. Or if they get an emergency phone call, but my tolerance does not include calling time to get another drink, or to have a smoke or to talk with friends. Your tolerance should not either.

Please don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the relaxed attitude at the league events. Some libation, some music playing, jokes and light conversation. But I understand that the rules of foos have been created to keep the games (which can be intense) fair. To keep the game fair each player must observe the rules. Rules are not created to make your life harder or to make the game one-sided. But it certainly feel like it if you, or more likely your opponents, do not abide by them.

Thinking that rules are to be stretched or dismissed can lead to fights, which lends a social blow to our game, but it also leads to misunderstandings that can fester and flair at the most inopportune time. When we fight among ourselves in public our sport will maintain the reputation of being rough and crass. This reputation will keep newcomers from joining in or spectating or encouraging others to pay any attention to us, to the game, to the sport.

Rules rule! Follow them and expect your opponents to call you on your mistakes and oversights. Feel free to call rules on yourself and be ready to explain them to the newer players.

Thanks for reading this. I invite comments.
