Foosers - I would like to hear from you regarding a local points ranking system. Trying to rate players is difficult at best, and without some type of system is nearly impossible. Currently the only system available to me is the ELO system that is a part of the netfoos website. The ELO system is the system used to rate chess players, and has been modified a bit to rank foosball players in the netfoos system. The quick and dirty on how it works is that players get points based on match results in tournaments. The amount of points are determined based on the quality of opposition you face. For example if a low ranked player will be highly rewarded for defeating a high ranked player. On the same token a high ranked player will only be given a few points for defeating a low ranked player. Two evenly ranked players would receive about the same point award or deduction depending on the out come of their match.

The system is a tried and true rankings system and has been used in chess for years. I am wanting to use the system to rank our local players. There are some events where we seed players and use rankings to place players in groups and my judgement should never be the criteria for how someone is ranked. The current list of points I just posted is based on 15 or so tournaments that I have entered in the netfoos system. I started everyone at 900 points and let the results of each match determine our points and rankings.

I have several questions that I want to hear the local player base chime in on before I move forward with any changes to the data or system...remember my goal for the system is to be able to rank local players accurately at our tournaments!

  • Should I include past tournaments on these results? If so how far back should I go?
  • Should I have used Dan's points as a starting point for our system? He had been compiling data for several years from both Tucson and Phx tournaments for his rankings?
  • Should I use the national touring points as a starting point for our system? Consider that most of our players have not toured in some time and most were set at 900 pts during the reset?
  • Should I consider posting our local events to the national points system? Only events that seed players and are played in proper divisions would qualify, for us that means any future larger tournaments would be considered.
If any of my statements are incorrect or you have other opinions and/or ideas please post them here. Lets try to keep this debate civilized and productive, as I know this can be a touchy subject.

I appreciate your attention to this matter, and thanks so much for supporting Arizona Foosball.

Respectfully,
Brad Chamberlain

Foosers -

I managed to access the last set of local points that Dan had in his database. It was built using the ELO system for about two years and is based on hundreds of tournament results. I use his points as a starting place for our players and added more tournaments to the PHX database, and then ran another point calculation. I am thinking about using this as our current rankings.

The old database had many players in it that don't participate in our tournaments any more. I will only add people to the list if they participate in a current AZ tournament, and the tournament director sends me the results. I will start them with the points they had in Dan's database.

I think it is very accurate for the most part. Please if you have any opinions let me know...

Foosers -

Some of our players are worried that the powers that be may take our local points to rank playes in large tournaments. With all the resets several players have expressed to me that they want to stay at the ranking they are at. With that said I will continue to keep the points for our local tournaments however I will not post them. I will just use them to rank players at our hi\lo, singles, and byp events. Thanks for your comments and support. If you have additional concerns please let me know, I want to consider all opinions.
